A PEAK AT THE PROCESS BEHIND OUR MARBLE BLOB SCONCE

VISITING SARABURI MARBLE WORKSHOP

WITH OUR NYC DESIGN PARTNERS

One of the great joys of opening our Chiang Mai showroom last month was that it brought many of our New York-based designers to Thailand for the first time. Among them was Hannah Bigeleisen, the designer behind our bestselling Saraburi Marble Lighting collection. For the first time, she had the opportunity to visit the workshop and artisans where her designs come to life.

Together with fellow New York designers Steven Bukowski, Michael Yarinsky of Tangible Space, and Kira De Paola of Kin + Company,  we traveled to our marble partners in Saraburi province. The second generation owner of her family business, P’ Wee and her mother oversee the production of our marble Blob Sconces alongside her team of artisans. While we’ve collaborated for years, this was the first time our New York designers experienced the process firsthand—witnessing the transformation from raw boulder to sculptural lighting.

THE BLOB PROCESS

The entrance to P Wee’s marble workshop is strewn with irregular marble boulders that were too unruly for large quarries to make it into countertops.

Our founder Robert Sukrachand chooses the boulders for their unique color and veining, and then these massive hunks of stone are sliced into thin sheets on a wet saw. After carefully tracing the Blob shape, the forms are cut rough and later refined by hand with a series of grinders.

Once the marble has taken on its signature Blob shape, a hole is drilled for the socket. Bevels are added by hand, making the lamp soft and smooth to the touch.

After meticulous sanding and polishing with progressively finer grits, the result is a beautifully honed matte finish—each lamp a testament to craftsmanship and respect for this beautiful, natural material.

This meeting of minds and hands between our two homes reinforced one of PERN BAAN’s core goals: the fusion of contemporary design from our community in the US with traditional Thai craftsmanship.
